Horse cleaning: the best cleaners to treat the coat

28 Apr 2023

Horse grooming, grooming in English, is a very important phase for the health of the animal. Like any species, in fact, our equine friend also needs treatments, tools and cleaners that can ensure his general well-being. The accumulation of debris, dirt and hair, in the long run, can in fact lead to a proliferation of bacteria, which are often the main cause of irritations and infections.

To meet the needs of our clients with stables and riding stables, we at Lory Veterinary Projects have created a grooming line specifically for horses. By using specific shampoos and oils designed for the needs of different coat types, we are able to treat most skin conditions and ensure excellent results. All of our products are made with the highest quality ingredients, free of parabens, salt and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), making them ideal for grooming adults and puppies with short and long coats of all colors.

Below we list the steps and best cleaners for thorough equine hygiene.

Grooming and pre-washing for proper cleaning of the horse

Among the most important moments in horse grooming is grooming, which is that step in which the coat is brushed and prepared for subsequent washing. The purpose of this step is to remove any dirt, layers of dust and hairs stuck in the coat, mane and tail.

For impeccably executed grooming, specific materials and cleaners must be used. In fact, choosing the most suitable tool allows a flawless job to be done quickly, thus avoiding overstressing and possibly unnerving the equine.

First, you need to loosen and remove debris all over the coat, paws and hooves and then proceed with combing the mane and tail. Once you have checked that you have removed all traces of mud, dust and knots, you can apply a specific pre-wash product.

Our Prewash is a degreasing preparatory treatment that revives all types of coats. Its action allows a thorough cleaning of the horse, thus removing all kinds of impurities. It is necessary to leave it on for five minutes, until a lather is obtained, and then rinse thoroughly.

Specific shampoos for thorough cleaning of the horse’s coat

Once the grooming phase is completed, we move on to the washing phase, a very delicate step that aims both to make the coat cleaner and silkier and to treat any skin problems. Before proceeding with the application of shampoo, it is first necessary to moisten the body with a sponge, taking care to pass it gently over the muzzle as well.

Depending on the type of coat and any diseases that affect it, you need to select the most appropriate product to perform a thorough and pleasant horse grooming. Specifically, if your equine friend has a white coat, he needs specific ones such as our argan oil-based whitening shampoo. Thanks to its emollient and softening substances, it increases the gentleness of the horsehair and reduces yellowing at the same time.

On the other hand, if she suffers from skin disorders, special cleansers should be used. In particular, when the hair is dull or has a condition with an inflammatory component, our Currant Revitalizer is the most suitable phytotherapeutic treatment. Otherwise, in cases where soothing antibacterial cleansing is needed, we suggest our Colloidal Silver Shampoo rich in moisturizing and antifungal active ingredients.

Post-wash cleansers for thorough horse cleaning

It is often thought that the washing phase is the most delicate and important, but the rinsing, drying and post-cleaning phases also require the use of specific tools and products. Our equine friends are very sensitive to temperature change, so it is critical to make sure that once the horse’s cleaning is complete, all excess water is removed and that they are as dry as possible.

Having completed this step, we move on to the mane and tail combing stage. To facilitate the treatment and give the final result a silkier effect, you can apply our detangling and restructuring oil based on vitamin E and other emollient active ingredients. This should be used before the comb, in fact it fights the creation of knots, gives volume and keeps the coat healthy.

On the other hand, if the hair is frizzy and damaged, you can make it smooth and plumped up again with our smooth oil. Its composition allows you to remove static electricity and facilitate the detangling process, making the mane and tail soft. It should be applied evenly, avoiding contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.
